Loudoun County has been known for a while as DC’s wine country but did you know it is now also the home to two dozen local breweries with more on the way? In addition to craft brews, many of the breweries also entice with food, live music, and special events.
There are three basic “types” of breweries here in Loudoun – Urban, Small Town and Farm breweries. Urban breweries are typically found in the more populated areas of Eastern Loudoun county like Sweetwater Tavern (Sterling) and Old Ox brewery (Ashburn) and are sometimes part of a full menu restaurant.
Leesburg and Purcellville are where you will find the small town brewers. New to the scene in Leesburg is Black Walnut Brewery right on King St and a new favorite on First Fridays. Many of these breweries also offer dining options like Loudoun Brewing Company and can be easily reached by folks cycling along the W&OD trail. Adroit Theory and Belly Love Brewing are among those that call Purcellville home.
Farm breweries tend to be in the Western towns of Loudoun where land and scenic views are plentiful. Old 690 Brewing Company in Hillsboro sits on 10 acres and often hosts live music. For one of the best views while you sip, check out Dirt Farm Brewery, just up the road from Bluemont Vineyards and Great Country Farms in Bluemont.
Because the list is always growing, I recommend you check here for a current list of Loudoun breweries and more info on special brew related events.
